Breakfast foods that don't contain wheat or dairy and something that is not eggs? Something that is quick to throw together as I'm not a morning person? Thoughts?
While I'm talking about food, I'll mention I'm reading The China Study. So far is seems like everything I love to eat is going to kill me eventually. Kidding! Okay, not really. Has anyone else read it?
I'm sure you've heard, but Google Reader is being killed off on July 1. I don't actually use google reader much these days as I read almost all the blogs I follow on my iPad using Flipboard. But technically they're being pushed through to there through the original google reader subscription. I've imported all the feeds I follow into Bloglovin for the time being just as a back up measure. You can find the feed on Bloglovin for my blog, Samantha cycles, right here.
As Google shuts down one more thing that I use on a daily basis, I think it's now time to move from blogger to self-hosted Word Press. I feel it's only a matter of time before Blogger is shut down. I found this post that spells it all out in details I think I can follow and answers a lot of questions I had. It's a really great post on making the move! So over the next 2 months I hope to work on getting things set up behind the scenes with the official move over by June 1. I'll keep everyone posted.
Calling all female cyclists! I insist you read this post from Fat Cyclist. Or maybe you're not a female cyclist but you roll your eyes from time to time at the way marketing uses women - then read it!
My half marathon is in two days! This also means I'm reaching the end of Friday Night Lights. I have just 4 episodes left. It's one of the best television shows ever. If you follow me on twitter you know I've got a little obsession going on with Coach Taylor and maybe Tim Riggins. But all kidding aside, what really shines through is Tami Taylor, aka Mrs. Taylor, aka Mrs. Coach. She is truly one of the greatest female characters ever on TV. And Connie Britton plays her perfectly. Friday Night Lights is available on Netflix and Amazon streaming.
Final run before Sunday!

I have most definitely read The China Study and I recommend it to EVERYONE. I have bought copies of it and handed it out, free of charge, to those interested. I shared a post recently of 10 books that changed my life and it is #1. Animal products really are killing the body. Most people don't understand that and it all boils down to big money and big business not wanting us to know. In the book The Food Revolution John Robbins touches on briefly how scared these industries are of us knowing this.
ReplyDeleteWhat blew me away was how Campbell (who has been studying this for over 25 years- and researching in his field for over 40) proved he can turn on and turn off cancer growth simply by adding and removing animal protein. That is such powerful information. He really is a brilliant man. Last year I went on a vegan cruise which was filled with classes and he was there giving some presentations, though I knew that going in. I got to meet him (I'd like to share that on the blog someday) and right after walking away I just uncontrollably cried. He's changed my and my family's life so much. Had I not given his book to my parents, my husband's grandmother, and some friends they wouldn't be as healthy as they are now. Oh and my husband's dad who just had a big scare is now doing so much better using what he learned in Forks Over Knives. I'm not giving myself credit here but giving Campbell credit.
I was plant-based before his book but then I went "plant strong." I read another book (which he references in The China Study), Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease (I highly recommend it too) by Dr. Esselstyn. Dr. Esselstyn, at the Cleveland Clinic who took patients who were told they were going to die and, in a nutshell, put them on a plant-based diet. All who stuck to the program are still living and those who didn't are dead. Then Dr. Esselstyn's son, Rip Esselstyn (which if you shop at Whole Foods you will see the E2 products of his) took his firefighting engine (E2) and got them to go plant based. In his book the Engine 2 Diet he shows the before and after results and not just weight changes. Honestly if I can list the resources on this information we'd be here a while. I read those books and was so stoked back when Forks Over Knives was being released, which the two main people in it are Dr. Campbell and Dr. Esselstyn. So for those who don't read much (though I do encourage reading those books) I recommend that film. Today, on the blog My Mod Style one of the items I'm giving away is a brand new copy of Forks Over Knives.
Thank you for posting about The China Study. It, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease (which is the book that made Clinton change his diet), and Forks Over Knives have changed so many lives already. There are actually groups all over the world now called Forkies where people get together and talk about the diet, how it has impacted them and support one another. I used to be a part of one. Again, though I was "vegan" before reading it it woke me up to other things (it and the other books and the film) and so I went whole foods-plant based. Which I do have to say, and I know I've said already, that every one of those doctors would tell you to keep that wheat in your diet, whole wheat that is.
Sorry for the incredibly long reply but this information is so important it deserves a lot of attention. Cheers Samantha!
DeleteThank you for taking the time to write such an informative comment. I watched Forks Over Knives a few weeks ago. Much of my reading lately has been prompted by a number of skin issues the last few months. Many of which I have had since I was very young (like the cystic acne) and a few others that have cropped up recently.
DeleteOh I'm so glad you watched it. I just read another article today about about how a plant-based diet helps acne (http://health.usnews.com/health-news/slideshows/7-reasons-to-choose-a-plant-based-diet/8 ). It's come up a lot in my readings.
DeleteCheers to ya!
Aubrey
Hi Samantha! I too have cycstic acne (although it seems mostly controlled now, probably due to changes in my nutrition). I also have a number of significant food allergies and sensitivities. Here are some thoughts for you:
ReplyDeleteBreakfast: steel cut oats (although there seems to be a relationship between wheat allergies and oats) or quinoa. I make quinoa in my rice cooker (1/4 c quinoa, cinnamon, 1 cup water, handful of raisins, 1/2 apple, chopped). It takes about 20 minutes to cook. Once cooked, I add coconut or almond milk, raw coconut, and chia seed. It's amazing.
Dairy: I love yogurt and eat it daily. I've had to eliminate cow dairy so have found alternatives. Look at both goat and sheep products (like cheese). I've recently tried coconut yogurt (not quite the same but okay) and almond milk yogurt (too runny, in my opinion). There's a company called So Delicious! that makes a variety of alternatives to cow dairy (yogurts, ice cream, milks).
Good luck with your half mary.
